I think you're right about Knoppix, but regardless, the vast majority of
distributions do have a live CD.

On occasion, such as the current Fedora Beta, it won't run in VirtualBox
though it may run fine if actually installed. (At least, several
people have reported this to be the case, it's been my own experience,
and on the testing list one of the main QA people mentioned that it
hadn't been tested.)

I also couldn't get it to run in VMware-player or KVM-qemu, though
others have gotten said beta to run in qemu. I just mention this, as
sometimes, one might find that using virtualization doesn't give an
accurate picture. It may be that the Ubuntu based distributions pay
more attention to whether or not it works in VBox.

See above--in most cases that's quite correct, but it may not be.

[nslu2-linux] Re: Rtorrent on WebOS

Oh and I found my answer:
http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/ticket/943

Actually the Pre's Internal memory is VFAT... Therefor prealloc of memory is essential for the filesystem... nothing I can do there
expect maybe use the work-around suggested (complicated!), or maybee lower app priority... If you think of something don't hesitate to reply!

As for the purpose of this experiment, it is mainly for Science :).

I actually found myself with a defective(Slider problems, phone shuts down when moving it too hard), out-of-warranty, Pre. RE: [LINUX_Newbies] Please bear with a newbie w/some questions

Hello all,

The information below is only my opinion.

When trying to figure out the best way to test Linux, there are a number of options available to you. These are the ones that come to mind for me, but if anyone knows other means to try it, feel free to pass on the information.

1. Download and burn ISO copies of Linux versions that allow you to run off CD.

This trend was started (I believe) by Knoppix, the original Live CD. Essentially what you can do is run everything off CD, without impacting your hardware in any way.

2. Run Wubi

If you are currently running Windows on the machine, you can download and install a copy of Ubuntu or Kubuntu that runs as an application in Windows. It's called Wubi, and allows you to select multiple versions to install. It creates a folder on the hard drive with the data stored there, so there's no permanent damage to your hard drive. You can get the download at http://www.ubuntu.com/

Basically, Wubi sets up a separate installation of Linux on the hard drive, but doesn't permanently modify your master boot record (used to start the operating system on the disk). You can choose to boot either Windows or Ubuntu when you start your computer.

3. Use virtualization software such as VMWare or VirtualBox

Additionally, you can use software such as VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/) to create virtual installations of Linux that run as applications inside Windows. This allows you to use both operating systems at the same time, with one acting as a virtual computer. You'll need to download previously created versions of the Linux distribution you wish to use, as the VMWare Player (I think) doesn't allow you to create new installations. If I'm wrong on that, though, please let me know.

If you want to play with multiple versions of Linux/UNIX and want to install them yourself, your best bet is to use a program called VirtualBox. It can be downloaded at http://www.virtualbox.org/

VirtualBox only requires the ISO version of the operating system you wish to install, so there's no need to burn CDs unless you want to keep a copy.

Either VMWare or VirtualBox allow you to use your operating systems simultaneously, while Wubi requires that you boot into the operating system of choice and use it exclusively.

Ultimately, you'll need to make a decision based on which method you prefer.

Hope this information helps all and sundry.

[nslu2-linux] Re: Fix a nslu that never worked out as a web server?

I've had a Slug running a Web server for *several years* and it hasn't let me down yet. However, I use lighttpd (not Apache) and Sqlite and Berkeley DB (not MySQL). LAMP needs more memory than the NSLU2 contains.

My other NSLU2s are NAS devices using the original firmware. They have been very reliable.

[nslu2-linux] Re: Fix a nslu that never worked out as a web server?

I posted a reply to this one yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have appeared. There's loads of info at http://www.nslu2-linux.org (read the info and disclaimer on the home page) including cool applications (I use my NSLU2 as a simple file share and to serve up MP3s using mt-daapd).

Since you don't know what you've done to your NSLU2 in the past and have lost the USB flash with the (possible Unslung) firmware on it, you could just start again from scratch, with a new USB flash/hard drive. You may well need to do a "redboot" (refers to the red(ish) light that appears during boot) - see the instructions here:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/InstallUnslungFirmware

Firmware is here: http://www.slug-firmware.net/u-dls.php

Very importantly, ***follow the instructions in the "readme" available with the firmware***

Have fun :)

[nslu2-linux] Re: Problems with installing iptables - ipkg upgrade/install problems

I posted a reply to this one yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have appeared. It's an ipkg repository issue. Instructions on a fix (focusses on issues experienced with ipkg upgrade, but it's the same issue with ipkg install) are here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/nslu2-general/message/8228

Details of what the problem actually is are at the beginning of that thread.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Help removing Ubuntu 9.04

After you have removed the grub manager from the MBR, you can use a USB
drive with System Rescue CD installed on it to re-size the drive. it
includes a few utilities to manage partitions.

Here's a link to the main site: http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

Before you make any changes, though, the one, most important thing is to
take everything on your XP installation that you wish to keep and make a
backup. There are tons of utilities to do so, and many of them are free.

The XP backup utility works well if you're backing up your entire
profile (and wish to restore using XP), but if you want to be able to
restore to other operating systems, you'll need to use a third party
solution. Personally, I simply copy files to an external hard drive.

If everything is in the same place (My Documents) and you don't have
anything saved elsewhere you want to keep, then you can copy the
directory (C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\My Documents) to an
external drive. For full safety, I recommend backing up the entire
C:\Documents and Settings\ folder, as many hidden files and folders will
be there.

IMHO, if I was you, I would dual-boot the new pc with Ubuntu.10.04
It would involve adding a Ubuntu partition to your hard drive.
It is a real easy OS to install and use, been using it fer years.

[nslu2-linux] Fix a nslu that never worked out as a web server?

Hello.

A while ago i wanted to use my NSLU2 as a web-server for my business.
I think i used all kinds of different ways to set it up and installed different versions of the different solutions.
Any way, i never managed to get it to work as i wanted, actually i hardly got it to work at all. So after a while i gave up and just built a new server from computer parts i had laying around and installed a lamp-stack on it, that only took me the time it takes to download the software, the rest was very simple and intuitive.
And yes, it works better than the nslu2, its faster, stronger, and more versatile, BUT its much bigger and more noisy, i guess you cant win them all.
Anyway, what can i do if i want to use my NSLU2 for anything after this? Are there necessary steps i need to do first? to be honest i don't know now what FW is in it, and the memory stick i had inserted and used for it is now missing.
So, what can i do? can i use it as it originally was built, or use it as a network share with different FW? I am a bit lost about this and really would appreciate some help here.
