[LINUX_Newbies] Need smallest OS

I have an old laptop with a 5G hard drive. I would like to install a linux OS. I have not used Linux in over 10 years. I would like some suggestions as to which one to load and a place to download a bootable cd. I have lots of time to experiment now, I just need the starting point. I have an old Dell that works pretty darn good, but Windows XP and all the updates, are way too much for it. Looking forward to hearing all suggestions.
Thanks so much, Peggie

[nslu2-linux] Would like jamvm upgraded from 1.5.3 to 1.5.4

Hi all,

Having just bought a device that supports ipkg (a Synology DS212), I'm trying to run a Java program (Crashplan) on it. The program makes use of java.lang.reflect.VMField, which is supported in jamvm 1.5.4 (the current version) but not 1.5.3 (the version in optware). Could someone with write access please update the package?

Alternatively, I'm willing to take a crack at compiling it myself, but the posted instructions fail for me; building even a simple package tries to fetch http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/devel/binutils/binutils-2.15.94.0.2.tar.gz which no longer exists there.

I'd appreciate any guidance to get me unstuck.

Matthew

[nslu2-linux] Can't re-flash NSLU2 with unslung

I was given an NSLU2 that had been flashed with V2.3R63-uNSLUng-6.10-beta and the password was conveniently written on a piece of tape on the case, so I was able to determine that the device does work.

However, the flash drive that was paired with the NSLU2 is missing.

From what I've read, it seems necessary to have it to run unslung, so it's 32MB replacement is in port #2, formatted with a FAT filesystem.

I've read the docs, compiled upslug2, downloaded the firmware and put the NSLU2 into "upgrade mode" using the reset button at power-on. I can see the LED flashing from red to green.

However, upslug2 reports "[no NSLU2 machines found in upgrade mode]".

And rebooting the NSLU2 into normal mode causes it to show up on the network at 192.168.1.77, so the network connection is OK.

I would like to use to use the device as a pyTivo server with an 2GB NTFS volume at port #1.

I haven't run across this situation while reading the docs.

So what do I do to get it working?

What do you mean by 'I created vm'...? Does that mean you've gotten the
point of finishing the installation of an OS in vbox? A specific
UI/application? I've not worked with vbox in a headless environment, but
even so, with a beter understanding of what you are having an issue with,
maybe I or someone else can better help. Also, did you install vbox
through the centOS package manager (I have no idea what that distro uses,
maybe dpkg?), or did you compile vbox from source (and if so did you set
any options or check for conflicts in dependencies?)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by iso image--do you mean an install
type CD or a complete image?

You've created your VM. Is it installed, or do you mean you've just
carved out the disk space, and now have to give it a target from which
to boot?

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Help in Postfix MTA

Hi,

you can restrict users to send mail in postfix by using smtp sender
restriction parameter. Use sender access sub-parameter in main.cf.

I have a page that is basically for CentOS/RH/ScientificLinux 5. It
doesn't cover some parts in later versions, but it should get you
started. Depending upon what distribution you're using, things will be
in different places, but perhaps it will be useful.

http://home.roadrunner.com/~computertaijutsu/ldap.html

It also has some other useful links in it. Good luck--LDAP
documentation is usually poorly done. (As mentioned in one of the links
on my page, though they're somewhat less polite about it. Sheesh, let's
face it, the folks who write about openldap indicate why they aren't
getting paid to be tech writers. :)

Some of us know how how to set up a Windows network using the Domain Controller. However, how many of us know how to set up a Linux network using OpenLDAP, NIS, NFS, etc.

This group is for people who are interested in setting up a Linux network using software like OpenLDAP.

I hope all of us can share our knowledge here. : )

[nslu2-linux] Re: Motion (software motion detector) release 3.2.12 -1 NO SQL support

Brian,

Thanks for the quick response and excellent work. SQL is working!!!

However motion is not going into daemon mode.

In motion.conf I configured "daemon on". I start motion the following way: "/opt/bin/motion -c /opt/etc/motion/motion.conf" (My motion config file is in "/opt/etc/motion/motion.conf"

Am I doing something wrong? If not, it would be great (actually needed) to get this working also.

Thanks,

Jaap
