[LINUX_Newbies] suse 11.3 issues

Hello list members,

I setup an suse 11.3 box on my home/work network several years ago to both familiarize myself somewhat with linux and to have a synchronization point for my work stations. The SUSE box is essentially a storage server and has copies of my workstations data using a windows open source sych software.

To get to the point, my workstation's hard drive went down and I am using the SUSE 11.3 station to do my work. Since all data is synched on it, I am using it for everyday work.

The problem is that I need to download software to get it to duplicate the functionality of my Windows applications. However when I try to install them by running the rpm packages (such as AVG for Linux for example or flash player), I get error messages that needed libraries cannot be accessed and the install fails.

I think this is due to the fact that 11.3 may no longer be supported and that the download locations no longer contain current code that can be downloaded. Is this the case?

Does SUSE require that I upgrade and abandon the previous version? Is the solution to the problem to upgrade to the latest version? I downloaded the ISO image of 12.1 but haven't yet burned it to dvd.

By running this version will it simply upgrade my current version or will I have to do a fresh install? Will I then be able to install other software that I need for every day work?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

[LINUX_Newbies] My Consolation Prize

I didn't hit the Mega yesterday but I got one of these for a dollar today:

http://www.pacificgeek.com/product.asp?c=220&s=1519&ID=847245&P=F

Not from them though. I picked mine up at a senior center sale, they thought it was broken. It kind of is, I mean it has Windows installed on it now. But guess what I'm going to put on it? I'll give you a hint, it starts with an L and ends with an x

On a sadder note I just noticed that Debian Lenny has completely passed away recently. When I ran apt-file update it just drew a blank. So Paulie needed a new pair of cores!

I would like to thank Microsoft for keeping their user base largely in the dark. It makes my TCO that much easier to bear.

Have you read this?

or maybe:

Often starting small then building on some success is a practical method. I know, tough in these days of instant gratification, but with Linux try to take a longer view. It pays off down the road. This comes from a guy who's run Linux for a good 17 years now, me!

Re: [nslu2-linux] Looking for replacement AC adaptor

Or...get a brand x power supply with the same output voltage and max current. If the plug is not the same, no problem, cut the wires of the replacement and defunct PSU, and wire the old plug to the new PSU. Solder, crimps, whatever, separate with heat shrink tubing (best) or electrical tape, etc.

I had this problem and managed to repair the PSU, required surgical dissection and replacement of 2 100uF electrolytic capacitors - just hope the glued/taped case doesn't start a fir and burn the house down... You can buy new replacements cheaply on fleabay I'm sure...

Do you mean you cannot configure MySQL? I did it once a long time ago. I kind of remember it being a little tricky. Much like all things MySQL.

Maybe this will help you?

http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch34_:_Basic_MySQL_Configuration

It looks pretty comprehensive to me. Just follow the "right" instructions for your distribution, and good luck, with MySQL you're going to need it.

I had the same problem.

I found that a USB hub can power it fine. So I bought a cheap one of those.
I think I made sure it was over 1.0A.

What I did in the end was used the same adapter 3.0A  USB hub power supply to power the USB hub connected and the slug
(Wired up in parallel) works great.

Hope this helps.

Most users don't run Linux. I don't know how misleading anyone is going to dispel any confusion either.

All I want to add is credit where it is due. Now that that is done you can get back to your regularly scheduled programming. But remember, I'll be fact checking you!

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Newcomer: Phooey - no GUI: Installled ubunto 8.04 on a 256Meg P3 machine

It is not unusual for an Ubuntu based distribution to refer to Ubuntu
rather than Debian even though Ubuntu is a spin off of Debian.

Most users not care where apt originated. They do not care about Linux and
its history or petty turf wars. They only want to use their computers
without hassles. When we split hairs over the wording of a review it is
divisive and will not help Debian or hurt Ubuntu. It only confuses users.

Although Synaptic is not included by default, apt-get is. As mentioned by
you, Synaptic is easily installable. It is the first app that I install
with any of the *buntus. I refuse to use SC and either use apt or Synaptic
for all of my installation. It isn't that SC is bad so much as it does not
provide the information that I need, such as a list of dependencies and the
source.

There are few polished distributions that are based on Debian stable. I
would know as I have tried them all. I also like the six month release
cycle and look forward to testing alphas and betas. People should feel free
to what works for them and to discuss their distros without having the
thought police come after them. We need to ease up and not get hung up on
terms and wording. It just distracts from discussion and adds little.

My guess is you do not have enough RAM to run the Windowing Environment.

You could install a more lightweight Window manager, edit your ~/.xinitrc file and try that to see. I recommend FluxBox for the test. If your system can't run that, it probably can't run anything.

At the command prompt:

sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove

sudo aptitude install fluxbox

then

$echo "exec fluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc

Cross your fingers and type startx

If it works you can incrementally try different window managers to see what level of functionality your machine can support. A couple you may like to look at include:

http://www.icewm.org/

and

http://www.xfce.org/

Good luck! Personally I'd try a lighter distribution designed for older hardware. Start small and work up.

I think if you're hearing anything it is your own grind stone. The truth will set you free.

From:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html

"The Debian package management system has a rich history and many choices for the front end user program and back end archive access method to be used."

From:

"In October 2009, when the Ubuntu Software Center became available, Synaptic and other utilities were to be replaced by the Ubuntu Software Center in an unspecified future version of Ubuntu.[1] In Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, Synaptic has been removed from the default installation, but remains available as a package in the repository."

[nslu2-linux] gconv-modules package problem

lftp :~> set ftp:charset gbk
gbk: this encoding is not supported.

the gconv-modules package is installed, though /opt/lib/gconv doesn't even exists.

the file it downloaded from the ddwrt repos:
http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/ddwrt/cross/stable/gconv-modules_2.2.5-7_mipsel.ipk
it's only 679 bytes

And in the nslu2 repos:
http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/nslu2/cross/stable/gconv-modules_2.2.5-7_armeb.ipk
it's 1.6MB

I guess the ipk file in the ddwrt repos is a faulty build? I tried to check the auto build log but found nothing related to gconv-modules, and I know very little about cross compile things, hope somebody could check it.

And I hope this is the right place to report this, if not, I hope I didn't disturb anybody. and forgive me for my bad English.
