Re: [LINUX_Newbies] How to keep GIMP Menus Visible?

If you are in the newest GIMP then you can have it all in one window. Go to
Windows, and Tick the box for Single Window mode. It should stay this way.
Otherwise you would control the individual windows from the
window controls. Right click on the top of the window border. Go to
Advanced and set it the way that you want it.

[LINUX_Newbies] How to keep GIMP Menus Visible?

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 and every
time I open GIMP I have to set the
two menu panels so they stay above the
center window, instead of disappearing
behind it.

Does anyone know how to set this to
be the default condition? I can't seem
to find that check-box.

Thanks for the help.

Michael.

Good to know! I assumed when I "compiled" an executable it was exactly that, a compiled executable.

file is telling me differently though:

$ file HelloWorld.gambas
HelloWorld.gambas: a gbr2 script text executable

I guess the same could be said of any interpreted scripting language though? Such as perl or python? I kind of need those installed to make that stuff run too.

I still think Gambas is pretty slick and I'll use it to make little calculators and stuff that I can use for some other interests of mine.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] An Application I just Discovered

True. Gambas2 is good if you want to write an program for yourself. But to
distribute it, it sucks.

RE: [LINUX_Newbies] An Application I just Discovered

I've used Gambas before, it's actually pretty cool. The problem is that if you want to run your app on another machine, the entire Gambas (and dependencies) need to be installed as well - a serious PITA. Not exactly good for writing apps you have any plans on distributing. From that perspective, Gambas is an absolute mess.

For an actual realistic solution of "Visual Basic for Linux", use RealStudio. It's not free, but really good stuff. I've been using it to write distributable GUI Linux apps for many years.

For those who run the chosen distribution the command to install it is:

sudo aptitude install gambas2

[nslu2-linux] usb hdd not detected by the installer

Hi!

I'm trying to install any version of debian in my nslug. Was working in the past but now it's impossible.

I have the following firmwares:

-NSLU2_V23R63.bin. Works ok, detect all USB drives.

-sda2-2.6.32-5. From http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/files/armel/sda2-2.6.32-5, to try to install the sqeeze tarball. I think that the usb HDD not is detected.
-Debian 5.0.4. The nslug boot and the installer runs (using archive.debian.org) but the usb HDD not is detected.

I'm using a external hdd and a usb memory, both fails with the 5.0.4 installer but works perfect with the V23R63. Also the external HDD was working on the pasr with my nslug (debian 5)

Any idea about why my usb divers not are detected by the installer?
Any command that I can type in the installation process that helps to understand the problem? logs?

Un saludo
Carlos Garcés

Re: [nslu2-linux] Corrupted bootdisk. Can I re-TURNUP?

I wouldn't recommend continuing to work with the sda disk.

It already showed irreparable read errors. Very bad sign.
At least check the smart data of the disk (smartmontools). to see te
overall health of the disk.
Usually it already had several read errors/bad blocks that the operating
system didnt see due to self healing mechanisms (block relocation).
That would mean it will very likely fail again soon. If that read error
from your logs was on new peronal data you dont have on a backup then
you already have irreversible data loss. You dont want to have that
again, right?

I would get me a new disk, restore a recent backup of sda on it (or
install os from scratch) and then try to salvage any important data from
sda that was not on the backup by simple file copy (with the old sda
externally attached).

The details of this vary depending on the exact setup (LVM used? 3 disks
directly attachable at the device or the Ubuntu server, ...) or personal
preference/knowledge.

Re: [nslu2-linux] Corrupted bootdisk. Can I re-TURNUP?

Hi,

you shound unmount the partition first. Then you can check it. See e2fschk for more details: e2fschk -p -v /dev/sda1. (http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/repairing-linux-ext2-or-ext3-file-system.html). Find another Linux machine to check the disk on it (it works even with linux runing on vmware where you can connect your drive using a sata to usb converter e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B002OV1VJW

I would also recommend to check the hard drive surface to recove bad blocks if any: http://hddreg.com/about

Thanks,
Sergey

Hello,

The boot disk of my NSLU2 with SlugOS 5.3 has several errors. I still can boot.

I tried to fix the errors by running fsck when the disk was attached to a Ubuntu

desktop, without success. I am afraid serveral files are corrupted. I cannot connect from my

Windows desktop to samba anymore.

Is there a way to re-TURNUP creating a new bootdrive?

I'm not a Linux expert, so be gentle on me, please!

My sentiments, too, as a desktop user, but some people who run servers in
particular require stable and do not need the latest and greatest. Why a
desktop user would want to run an older version of the GIMP and not be able
to run LibreOffice at all since it was not around 2 years ago is anybody's
guess.

The problem with Debian stable is it would be more aptly named Debian Stale. By the time the Debian team is ready to put the stable stamp on a release it is usually about 2 years out of date. Which can lead to problems if one wishes to run some software not found in the distribution repository.

cat /etc/debian_version says 6.0.5 on this machine but whether I'm running pure stable or not is a point of contention.

~$ dpkg -l | grep "~bpo" | wc -l
37

I've done a bit of other monkey business here and there in order to get some things to work too. For instance du -h on /usr/local returns 865M which is a fair chunk of my /usr directory that totals 5.6G

Watching that scroll by reminded me why I love Linux so much. Seeing so many old friends, even if only fleetingly ...

This box is young yet. I've only been running it for a couple months now. It is getting there though. I like a certain level of cruft to be really comfortable. Building a thick enough layer up can take me a couple of years.

Linux, computing the way it was meant to be.

I think you are barking at the wrong tree. The testing branch is for
testing... If you want something functional for daily use, you probably
want to find a more stable release. If you are just looking to learn, I'd
say have fun

On the other hand, it looks like our emails are getting blogged:

So if no luck on this list, maybe a helpful commenter will come along.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Aptitude fails to configure 'dirmngr'

I agree. Debian is for experienced users. It can be finicky to set-up,
especially with the binary blobs removed. Debian is great for some people.
It supports the most architectures and is the basis for many distributions,
but it is fairly old school in terms of its use and look. That being said,
its community is large (and can be prickly at times) and you should be able
to resolve just about any problem if you have the time and patience.

There are many excellent Debian derivatives, some are based on Debian
testing and others on Debian unstable. They work downstream to smooth out
the bugs and add usability. Some of the bug fixes make it back upstream,
but it is a slow process. Linux Mint Debian Edition or LMDE is based on
testing and Ubuntu and its derivatives is based on unstable, as is aptosid.

Stop right there. Debian testing is exactly that, the testing branch. It is supposed to have problems! Debian testing is also not a proper choice for newbies either.

Heck, I don't think any Debian version is the best choice for a newbie. Debian is only really user friendly to experienced users. As much as I may like the stuff I have to be realistic. The best words I can think of to describe Debian would be inscrutable, or perhaps intractable.

I just ran into a known bug in stable running Debian today myself. I wonder if my workaround will work? I did do something rather esoteric in this day and age in order to manifest it though. I mean really now, how many people actually use gpm anymore?

I'm from a time when gpm was rather popular though.
