Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Want help finding a Distro where Xscreensavers are already set up

Xcreensaver uses a Daemon. You can put it into your startup applications.
Go to System Settings in the Favourites or Settings folder. Go to the last
item at the bottom, Startup and Shutdown. Go toAutostart. Add Program. Then
Navigate to Xscreensaver or just type it in. It won't take effect till you
re-boot, but it is not worth re-booting just for that. If you want it in
the meantime just start it manually and it will offer to run the daemon.

This is what he wrote last night:

"xscreensaver installed and running, but, I have to start it again when I reboot. Not sure why ?? Pinguy installed now. I like it now by far the best !"

I've noticed that on many new Distros lately myself, is it a decision that there is no way around, or something as confusing for newbies like Terminal commands?

KDE uses its own screensavers. That is the idea behind KDE, to be a
complete software collection. Usually it is set to blank the screen after
the default time (15 minutes?). It does not come with many choices but you
can add screensavers, but it involves compiling for the most part. You
change that in the System Settings which is in the Favourites and Settings
menu folders (both). Look under Hardware section for Display and Monitor.
It is the second item in the list. These are KDE not Mint instructions.
Mint could do something entirely different as they are prone to do.

You can also add Xscreensavers using the package manager. Once installed
just click on the menu button and type screen and the settings should pop
up. Mine says Screensaver with a flame in the monitor icon.

My question would be why use Mint KDE at all? Kubuntu is closer to the
Ubuntu source and comes out a couple of months before Mint KDE. It is
pretty much stock KDE with a few Ubuntu things added and you can still use
Ubuntu One etc. Mint KDE is a much smaller project and slower to develop. I
can see choosing Mint for Cinnamon or Mate, but KDE? The choice is his, but
I find it strange.

That's a pretty vague question with a lot of potentially complicated
answers. I'd suggest doing some research on your own first for things
like "How to configure postfix" and "how to configure sendmail" and
"how to set up a smtp server" then ask specific questions if you
should have any at that point.

I have a Newbie over on SimplyComputers that is trying to set up Linux for a client, but this is his first foray into it from Windows. I've sent him his screenshots of Synaptic on both Mint Linux LXDE and Bodhi Enlightment. He says he's tried 10 Distros so far, I only know about his questions regarding Mint Linux Cinnamon and Mint KDE, which he prefers.

I emailed him to try a Google search that said some had solved it or to join the Mint Linux Forum, or come here, but like all of us, he has other hardware and life happenings that pull him from it. However, he says he won't give up.

Anyone one want to give him a helping hand with Mint KDE and Xscreensavers?

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Updated now I am lost

When you have a mess then the best option and usually the fastest, too, is
to re-install. The basic process is to back up to external media your files
if any. Then download the ISO (I suggest 12.04 LTS) and burn it to disk
using your favourite DVD burning application. Even Windows ones will work.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Then insert the disk and re-boot. It will offer to install or let you try
it without installing. I suggest the second. It will run slowly since it is
running off the CD, but will work more or less as the installed version
would. See if graphics, sound and wifi work fine. If so, then go for the
installation. No need to re-boot. You can do it from the Live CD. If
something does not work then get back to us and we can likely fix that.

When installing you will have choices about where to put it. Since Ubuntu
is already on it then you do not need to worry about partitioning. Just
choose the same location and it will install in about 15 minutes. Remember
your user name and password. Re-boot and update using the update manager.

You can have to locations open, or two widows displaying file manager. I usually have one window smaller and copy or move by dragging. You can also cut and paste into folder.

Hi,

Why I cannot use the copy- and move-option in the context-menue (right-click) fully?

I do want to browse to a special folder or target: for example a removable device.

There are only two options: Home or Desktop.

You can print any file as a pdf in Linux, including Fedora, using the print
menu. Just choose: Print to file and tick PDF. Then give it a name.

I didn't check all of Joan's links, but LibreOffice, the standard Fedora
Office suite, does that.

yum -y install libreoffice-writer

should pull in all necessary dependencies.

Then, open the .doc file in Libreoffice, and from the file menu choose
