I found what you feel was a "mess" to be a fairly
normal email reply on such a subject. I took a
peek at the www.winmd5.com site and will go
there again, when I get my next broadband
allowance, to check further. As I said, finding
sites that offer MD5 help isn't hard--it's just a
matter of knowing who's good, who's a waste
of time, and who's even worse than a waste of
time.

I certainly appreciate "getting the word" to help
sort it out.

To help with your choice can you post the resource your system has? (e.g. CPU, Hard drive space, graphic card, if you have one, memory amount).

I actually have two matters in mind--one is trying
to convert my old netbook that fails at the Windows
checking site; if that fails, I'm not much worse off
than using it for a .357 target, LOL. The netbook
is limited primarily by having an Atom processor
and what ever makes it fail the windows test. I do
have plenty of HD space, though; I haven't looked
into the RAM or graphics card but they seem to be
OK--they support what little I use that machine for.
The other matter is rather open-ended; my dream
machine would probably run better with Linux and
a VM holding a newer version of Windows to handle
a program I want that has no likelihood of becoming
a multi-platform item.

Hello
Sorry about the mess: all the links printed out which made the ideas hard to understand, below is a cleaned up version.
To help with your choice can you post the resource your system has? (e.g. CPU, Hard drive space, graphic card, if you have one, memory amount).
Read the reviews from distrowatch; the reviews are linked to under the different OS, and distrowatch has a "page hit ranking" with adjustable time scale.

Hello
First here is a link to a utility to calculate the md5checksum http://www.winmd5.com/
The md5checksum listed on the website for the file you download, should match the number produced by the md5checksum program. This way you know the file has been completely downloaded. If the md5checksum do not match than the file is corrupted and has to be downloaded again, do not use the file delete the file.

Second here is a link to distrowatch http://distrowatch.com/ , which is starting point to find out about the different Linux operating system, and there a great many.

Important notes: from distrowatch: Click on Mint or Mageia distro links and one should see a list of information about the distro. Here is Mageia distro :
OS Type: Linux os type Linux ( this is the kernel which interacts with the CPU)

Based on: Independent (originally forked from Mandriva (this handles other hardware)
Origin: France

Desktop: Cinnamon , GNOME , IceWM , KDE , MATE , LXDE , Openbox , Razor-qt , WMaker , Xfce  ( The different Desktops are what use the greatest amount of system resources. Note There are many different desktops to choose from, but windows has only one desktop Windows)

Thanks--one problem starting out with this is
that I have very little basis to judge whether an
offering is OK or just another way to mess up
my system. I'll be back on the trail when I get
past the start of my next broadband cycle.

What should I be using?

I used versions that were based on LXDE and older that used the rain drop desktop. What do you want to know?

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Digest Number 4266

The latest version is available here:

http://download.cnet.com/Robolinux/3000-18513_4-75925504.html

Then just install it in VB yourself.

It looks like the developers is seeking a mandatory donation of at least $1 for the new version and that the old one was removed due to compatibility issues with newer VB.

Another thing that you could try is searching your trash and HD for the missing file.

Cheers,
Roy

I suppose I've come across a Distro's author attempt to keep his Distro cleaned up from his auto-scripting or whatever you call it. I grabbed his RoboLinux freebie just prior to his new release, but when I went back his archived file, I had downloaded had disappeared from my Home folder after un-archiving it. I have never come across this behavior before and I can't download it again, since he has removed it. I see no sense to upgrade to his new version, since I don't use webcams, unless there are other reasons. I have never used VirtualBox before and wonder if this is a taste of things to come, or is it Debian or just RoboLinux short-falls?
I have contacted RoboLinux, but I have a feeling they want money for help, which I can see if I was a big company or selling my services, but I'm a retired tech donating Linux computers to those in need to keep myself learning and helping while doing it.
Any ideas?
