[LINUX_Newbies] Linux and differenz machines

Good afternoon.
example: I install Xubuntu on an old PC 2 GB fine.
I install Xubuntu on a new machine PC 8GB and problems.
I saw this with many Linux Distros: Machine a ist fine, but machine b
makes problem. But other distro is fine but bad on machine a.

Can I improve this?

Sophie

I have a page on troubleshooting wireless. It doesn't sound like the
router is the problem.
I have a page on at least checking if wireless works.

http://srobb.net/wireless.html

As Linux becomes more like Windows, one has
the same types of problem, things not working for no apparent reason.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Wireless Connection on Laptop

Try RoboLinux, Mint Mate, Bodhi had some help, and Puppy should work. Did you apply the updates while plugged into a wired connection?...that's how it updates any seen hardware, etc. Did you add the extra Lubuntu Restricted in Synaptic MetaPackages? Sometimes plugging in an USB "N" LAN adapter for some Distros might be faster.

Well, I know there is "some" growth but I wouldn't have thought it
would have such a noticeable effect on processing speed since the
.iso for 17 was only a little larger than that for 16. If you think the
slowness is just due to greater requirements, that's actually quite
encouraging considering the alternative possibility.

At least it's not as bad as going to Windows 8--that requires more
than just size. My machine lacks a feature of the BIOS needed to
run Windows 8. (7 doesn't appeal to me because I'm not at all
pleased with it at work and, besides, going for less than the
latest version is how we wound up with the demise of support
for XP "problem.")

That's not unexpected. Many Linux distributions demand more resources with
each release. In the same way that Windows 7 expects more in resources
than Windows XP, a new version of Linux will usually demand more resources,
including the size necessary for an installation.

That certainly turned out to be what was happening. I got
an apparently good install by going with the sdb as being
the system on the target computer.

I tried for a root of 30 GB, a swap of 2GB, and the rest of my
160 GB as my home file. That way, at very least, I expect to
be able to quickly do a backup of whatever is unique to my
system. If the old beast lasts long enough, I may be able to
do some future upgrade smoothly.

FWIW, my result appears to run slower than Version 16 with
its default setup; however this is an old machine and it may
have just gotten a little closer to its end.

Thanks for all the help. There were a lot of unexpectedly-
strange-to-me things in this.

Assuming you have them in a directory called photos, while in that
directory

First test it.

for i in *.jpg;do echo mv "$i" "${i%%.jpg}" A.jpg;done

This will show you what it would do. For example,in a directory that has
two pictures, 1.jpg and 2.jpg I ran the command and get

for i in *.jpg; do echo mv "$i" "${i%%.jpg}"A.jpg;done
mv 1.jpg 1A.jpg
mv 2.jpg 2A.jpg

Once you've tested it by using echo you can now it for real.

for i in *.jpg;do mv "$i" "${i%%.jpg}" A.jpg;done

In this case, what we're doing is what's called a for loop, (because it
uses the word for, as opposed to a while loop). for i in *.jpg means for a
a variable, which we're callling i, in a group, in this case, any file
ending with .jpg, move, (in this case, that means rename) the file. The
${i%% means that we're going to get rid of whatever comes after the %%, in
this case, .jpg, then outside of the bracket, put in a letter A and put the
.jpg back. There are other ways and scripts, but that is one of the
simpler methods, IMHO.
