Re: [LINUX_Newbies] What computer should I buy?

I bet you get a lot of replies to this one.    There are may opinions and things to consider.

I like the Dell brand.   The reason is simple.   Dell comes with excellent diagnostic utilities built-in.   Often, if problems arise, it may be difficult to separate hardware issues from software issues.   With Dell, it is often very easy to spot hardware problems by pressing the f12 keys --- and let the computer spot its own hardware problems.

By pressing the f12 key when you see the Dell  logo- a dell computer will go into a diagnostic mode.  You can run a variety of diagnostic checks and quickly spot hardware problems.

Today, I was having a trouble hearing the sound out of an old Dell Dimension 4600.   I pressed f12 and ran a sound diagnostic.  I immediately heard a sound in the speaker.   This eliminated hardware problems and told me to focus on software.    I found the problem  a short time later.

Hope this helps

Justin

I would like to devote a single computer to Linux only.  Not sure what distribution I'll go with yet.  But my first problem is what hardware should I buy to use as my Linux station.

I do NOT want to build from scratch.
I do NOT want to pay a small forturne for the best PC out there.
I DO want a PC that works well as a Linux workstation.
I DOUBT I will do much graphics and such and definitely won't be doing gaming or other CPU demanding work.
I WILL likely be using other programs that deal with audio processing.
I plan to use this workstation mostly for learning Linux.
I would prefer to buy something locally, at Best Buy, Frys, etc, rather than online.
Whatever I buy should be ready to go.  I don't want to have to start removing and adding anything (hardware wise).

These area bout the only requirements I have at the moment.

Re: : [LINUX_Newbies] VLC in Mint 17

UEFI, if you haven't dual boot with it, can be very hard to get it done. Android is Linux but with an Yes and No.
You can not run Linux programs on Android or Android programs on Linux. It can not be done without hours of loading what is needed. Some one who does not know how or what is needed will be lost.

Again with Windows UEFI, some one who does not know how or what is needed will be lost. And that is why Apple gets away with what they do. They give you all the tools you need to dual boot. Windows UEFI and Android don't.

[LINUX_Newbies] VLC

Folks, this horse isn`t dead yet. I`ve tried,tried,tried,.................. My point ? VLC and Youtube are widely used in business as tools for presentation to business clients. Windows plays VLC and Youtube videos very well.
I can use my Macs also in this endeavour. Sigh! One of my four AsRock computers works well with VLC and Youtube. Three do not. Maybe, just maybe, there will be a solution for this. Meanwhile, I do what I must do.
I have Linux, Microsoft, and Mac. I use that which works. I`m still here. I don`t give up easily. I continue to to try.

These days, Linux will work on most machines out of the box.
Sometimes--depending upon the salesman--they'll let you boot from a liveCD
or USB to test it. It depends and one can't fault them for saying no, they
have no idea that you don't have some horrible software on said CD or USB.

I've found the Acers to usually be usable with Linux. Really new things
might have issues. Actually, even if you can't boot it with a live CD, you
should be able to tell, from the Windows screen, what sort of network,
wireless, and video card it's using, write that down, go home and google
how it works with Linux.

Re: : [LINUX_Newbies] VLC in Mint 17

Apple gets away with it because they give you the tools to install and dual boot. Microsoft and Android doesn't. You can not dual boot from Android or Microsoft since Microsoft started using secure boot. Android just will not let you dual boot.

Windows 10 will be like Android in the respect that it will make users dependent on MS, just as Android makes users dependent on Google. Note that Google is being investigated in Russia for antitrust violation by bundling its apps with Android. That is interesting because Apple does the same and does not even allow users to change default apps which Android does do. Now that MS is going down this road it may usher in an age of antitrust investigations. Time will tell.

For Linux users we have used this mode of getting apps for a couple of decades. It does have its benefits in allowing users to download and install centrally from secure repos. No hunting and no worries about security. The Windows model is profit based and this opens users up to being vulnerable to paying through the nose for smaller annual subscriptions. Death by a thousand cuts.

We can agree on your thoughts on Linux. I can see some cracks in the hold that MS and Apple have on the industry. The fact that MS is giving free upgrades to Windows 10 for the first time is a shift. They are still the same but have shifted focus from the OS to services and apps that they can profit from. The problem is that free only addresses cost. It is not truly free because the OS belongs to MS and the user just pays to use it. Your computer needs an OS and if they have their hooks in you then they control you and how you use your computer. We'll see if people grasp that part of free.

I admire tenacity in trying to resolve a vexing problem.

You are clearly frustrated and we know that you would like a solution. I am sure that there are many qualified people here who would have helped you if they could have. We all have tried to understand the problem and posted what we thought would be helpful solutions. None has worked, regretfully.

Often times in these discussions we can only see what users give us which is often not the complete picture that you see. We also have different skill and experience levels so what I say and what someone else says may be very different. This can result in the user going on wild goose chases through no one's fault or intention. This can be a source of frustration as it leads to tangents and wasting time. It is the same experience if you use Google. Lots of solutions but which one to use and much information is stale dated.

One of the things that I try to do in this community is to educate new users (retired teacher, go figure) on how things work and why things are the way they are. Lots come to Linux with misconceptions (not suggesting you, but generically). Once users understand the hows and whys they can get a better appreciation of Linux as an operating system and how it is put together. That sometimes reveals a solution or points us in a direction. Sometimes not. Another thing that I keep in mind is that this is an open forum. In writing to you I am writing to others who may have a similar problem or have been previously silent and now they feel they can add their voice. So in mentioning other video players that may not help you but it may help another person.

My suggestion is that you remain patient and try other sites and options available to you. There are alternatives. You of course are free to hold out for a solution to VLC. However, that make take time and in rare cases a solution does not come at all or it becomes moot as a new version or new kernel may be released which magically resolves the situation. Just know that it is a fluid situation. VLC makes changes continually. Youtube does too (now runs html5 by default). Kernel developers are hard at work releasing a new version every month. Distros are working too to make things better. I mention this so that you know that it is not a static situation that you are in, not to anger you or explain it away.

I wish you well in resolving it. If I see anything I will be sure to post it, as I am sure others will, too.
