Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Linux and Windows 10 problems

It does not have to be Mint disk. Any rescue or Live disk or USB key will rewrite grub. Most computers will boot to CD without changing anything on BIOS. I have upgraded several computers to Windows 10 and grub was unaffected. It may depend on how you installed out upgraded. I don't know.

Google rewrite grub2 for the commands.

There is probably some way to get into the BIOS. You might try doing that
and seeing if secure boot is enabled. Or, perhaps Windows 10 has some new
thing or changed the partitioning enough to break things.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Media streaming distro

I agree, but it isn't so much KDE stumbling as Kubuntu rushing things. Much of the functionality was still in development when Kubuntu went ahead with including Plasma 5 instead of KDE 4. The problem was compounded by not including KDE 4 in the repositories. As a long time user of KDE I can tell you that Plasma 5 will be outstanding when it is complete.

I am not sure what the problem with Ubuntu is. Partly systems is to blame since Upstart works fine. The rest of it is shared across Unity and GNOME which just manage to lose the panel.. Cinnamon and XFCE work fine.

Needless to say I am looking forward to 15.10 to sort this out.

Thanks, Loyal. You will be glad to know that I almost got to install Mint, but am waiting for 15.10 to decide whether I should bother. I still want KDE and the latest and the greatest kernel etc.

Let's hope not, but it does sound like something THEY'D do. Is there
any companies out there that make new computers that don't have this
restriction? My HP in the living room runs Windows 8.1, and it's
pressuring me to upgrade to Windows 10. Seeing as how I can't even log
into my account on the computer unless I enter my password for MSN (God
forbid I ever need to reboot that PC when the internet is out) and
remembering the money that folks had to spend to upgrade to Windows
Vista, I'm not going to do it. I'm not sure why anyone would, but I've
heard that not a lot of people think like I do, though that number is
increasing daily. I'm sure the OP had their own reasons for using
Windows 10, but I'm glad that I don't have to at this moment.

That May be--I'm working through my upgrade
to Win 10, hoping to be able to set up a Linux
with a VM for Windows to run programs that
need to run on a real, genuine, Windows (not an
emulator).

I have no idea what's happening except that
MS doesn't ever seem to put out a new version
without some toxic changes.

So I also would like to know more, including a
description of whatever turns up that works for
you.

Depending upon how new the computer is, it may be harder to disable secure
boot. However, several of the major distributions, are able to boot with
it. Not sure about Mint.

However, the OP can't get into the BIOS. Might be worth calling the
manufacturer's support--no need to mention Linux, just say you need to get
into the BIOS and don't see a way.
