If you bought software, didn't they offer support? That would probably be
better than some guy on a mailing list who only plays casually with ffmpeg.

Ok, looking again I see what you mean, the stuff to the right.

Usually that's a font issue, but the only way I know to play with that is
to add fonts till it stops looking bad. You can also try a different
browser to see if that helps as sometimes, one browser's fonts work better
than another's.

(See, my German is so bad I didn't realize it was saying upload photos and
share, and instead, though it was an error message.)

Mp4 is playable by most things, but last time, I believe you said that
some of your friends couldn't use mp4. You really have to experiment--if
you take a small file, like the one you gave me, and try different
containers, and have your friends test, you'll have your answer.
>

Whatever video codec I used last time. I think the audio was aac, but you'd
have to look at my old emails, because honestly, I don't remember.

>

x265 is smallest space, but it's still relatively new, so some things
can't play it. Not sure about sound, but video tends to take more room
than audio.

This seems like a reasonable article about it.

http://www.learningsolutionsmag.com/articles/1203/video-compression-secrets-smaller-files-better-quality

Generally, ogg will be the smallest audio size. One reason you have to try
with different formats is because each person has different taste--through
low quality laptop speakers, I can't tell much difference between audio
format, but on good speakers, I probably could.

>

That's what you have to do. If I were doing this for someone, I would use
libx265 and ogg, or possibly aac and tell them to figure out how to play
it, but I'm a nasty human being who is dead inside, and basically hang out
with other tech people.

Slackware publishes both 32 and 64 bit versions..

I run 32 bit versions on all 64 bit supported machines because I don't need
the terabyte addresses of 64 bit..

I'm thinking that, in my case, 32 bit is better because of half the address
bytes whilst running, if that makes any sense.. I know we're talking about
millions of bytes per second but there may be a bottom line difference??

I've often looked for comments along those line; maybe someone here can
expand??

My experience with VB is that it might throw more curves than a straight
install.. Having some discarded free HD's it's easier, for me, to use
multiple HD's for trials..

Many times when installing Linux on a previous M$ box, you need to zero the
drive first to be sure it's "clean," I've read and practice..

Slack 14.1 is not obsolete of course and is still supported and used by
thousands.. Downloading an .iso version, burning a DVD of that file, and
booting/installing 14.1 has never burped in many older 32 bit machines.. I
have it running on a RasPiB too.. In short the DVD should boot with no
fuss..

PHP [WAS: Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Apache issue]

I got really annoyed because my apache server wouldn't start, so I
opened up /etc/conf.d/apache2 and deleted the -D PERL bit from the
APACHE2_OPTS line. I don't really NEED perl right now. Apache started
as expected. What I REALLY need right now is PHP to work. I remerged
php earlier today, but still when I issue php at the command line, it
just sits there without any output. At this point I'm thinking the
problem is not PHP itself, but rather something it depends on. There's
nothing in /var/log/messages about PHP and no man page. I'm at a loss
as to what to do at this point. Please help!

I've got a newer computer with Windows 8.1 in the living room that my
wife bought for me in 2012 so that I could play Final Fantasy XI with
her. It has virtualbox installed on it. I thought I'd try Slackware
on that. I downloaded an ISO of Slack 14.1. I got the install-dvd iso.
When I tried to boot it, it said that I needed an image for my kernel.
I ran memtest and that told me that my kernel is an AMD A6-5200 APU
with Radeon HD graphics. Where do I find an image with a kernel that
would fit that particular processor? I knew Slack was old, and in my
experience, old is usually better than new, but I expected the DVD image
to contain everything I needed to at least boot it.

I gave the tab remerging php a Control+Z while mod_perl was finishing.
Once I finish php, I'll do a perl-cleaner --all. Want to keep my bases
