Open a terminal and cut and paste the following command:

uname -m

That should reveal whethert you have a 32 or 64 bit machine.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Firefox 46 issues (Resolved)

Hi Gene,
There was no way to roll back unfortunately but I found out, through the Mozilla forum, that the problem was an incompatibility issue between FF46 and the theme I( was using - oxygen gtk. Thankfully, changing the theme has solved the problem.

Try locate snd, but I'm guessing you'll have to add some modules to your
kernel (that is, rebuild your kernel. If they've updated their docs, it
may be easy to find, if not, it may take a few tries.

The last time I tried Gentoo, only a few months ago, their alsa docs were
out of date. (Maybe that's been rectified now, but even a big Gentoo fan at
work mentions that the docs are usually out of date.)

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] No sound on Gentoo

I'm trying to follow the ALSA guide at

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA

The line that says

getfacl /dev/snd/controlC0 | grep larry

doesn't work for me:

caitlyn linux # getfacl /dev/snd/controlC0 | grep michael
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
caitlyn linux #

and IDK how to make it work. I'm in the audio group:

caitlyn linux # grep audio /etc/group
audio:x:18:amy,michael,mythtv,vdr
caitlyn linux #

I THINk I have the correct kernel driver for my card. I'm using the
AC97 driver. Alsamixer gives some output that seems strange to me:

┌─────────────────────────────────────── AlsaMixer v1.0.29
────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Card: HDA Intel PCH
F1: Help │
│ Chip:
F2: System information │
│ View: F3: Playback F4: Capture F5: All
F6: Select sound card │
│ Item:
Esc: Exit │

│ This sound device does not have any controls.

All modules live in /lib/modules/<kernel version>.  Also, the ALSA page in the Gentoo Wiki is likely helpful:  https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA.

Not yet but I just started getting "nags" to get
46. My usage is most often on a Macbook Pro
so not directly related to Linux; Recently it
seems Firefox has an "improvement" rather
often and I think they are fighting some kind
of problem as my Firefox has been crashing
a lot for quite a number of versions.

I think I will hold off since they may be just
making things worse, judging from your post.

Can you go back to your previous version and
just let Firefox work their way through whatever
their problem is?

Usually those things live somewhere in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/drivers/

But as you're running Gentoo, YMMV, I'm not as familiar with Gentoo and where they put things.

Yes, especially if you're running Gentoo. :) Seriously, 64 bit should
shorten compile time--I realize you say you're not concerned with that, but
it's still nice.

RESPONSE: I haven't followed everything here as the bottom post thing confuses me, but if you can't download a new ISO image for a DVD/CD, why don't you purchase (for about $5.95) one of the more standard distros like Linux Mint from something like the following link? Then at least you would know if there is a computer hardware issue or if it is just software-related. https://www.osdisc.com/products/dvd/linuxmint?affiliate=distrowatch
