Re: [nslu2-linux] dead nslu2

If you have problems with your NSLU2 booting up properly, there might be several reasons (including corrupted nonvolatile memory), but power supply is probably most common. Checking the 5V power supply without load does not always help in locating the problem. Power supplies with bad electrolytic capacitors may drop in voltage under load, while appearing "okay" with nothing else connected than the voltage meter.
Also, it could be helpful to check the NSLU2 PCB for discoloration from heat, or visibly "blown" electrolytic capacitors, too.

[LINUX_Newbies] Preferred Applications

I have seamonkey-bin set as my web browser in preferred applications,
but when I click links in emails nothing happens. I'm using
thunderbird-bin as my MTA and have it set as my perferred web browser.
I'd really like it if when I clicked links in emails they would open. I
am using xfce4 as my desktop environment. I don't even know WHERE to
look to find out what's going wrong with it. I ran thunderbird-bin from
a terminal in the hopes that it would spit out SOMETHING that would let
me know what's going on, but it didn't. All I got was the files that it
loaded for my email. Nothing beyond that. Please help!

I'm pretty sure that last expression is Portage's if-then syntax.

If the python flag is set, then your python target needs to be 2.7.

If qt5 is set, qt4 needs to be unset.

If kde is set, qt4 needs to be set.

Right now, you have kde, qt4 and qt5 all set.  You either need to disable qt5 or disable qt4 and kde.  In theory, you could just make these changes in package.use, but that might cause other problems.  Generally, these flags should be global, so you need to decide which version of qt you want to run.  If you're actively using KDE, then that probably means you should stick with qt4 for now.

Re: [nslu2-linux] ERROR: Your Pogoplug device does not have a hard drive attached

No, we have Time Warner...which was just bought out by Charter. I use my pogo remotely every day to access all my music. But this is the first time I had something like this happen. Well, at least it resolved itself for now, haha. Thanks again for your insight. Kindest regards...8-]

In most cases, you are better off using 64 bit. Many distributions are
cutting down on support for 32 bit. Generally, if compiling (and that
would include using ffmpeg to re-encode, you will usually find that 64 bit
can do it faster

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_x86_1304&num=4

is an older article about Ubuntu 13.04, but it gives some performance
benchmarks, indicating the better 64 bit performance.

[LINUX_Newbies] 32or64?

good morning
we bought a new computer for the office.
And the salesman said
You can install on the empty machine Debian 32 or 64.

What does it better?

Is 64 fast and 32 save?

Regards
Sophie

Here all other computers use buntu and limux 32.

[LINUX_Newbies] Portaudio and mpg123

OK. So I've got sound in mplayer (which is a start), but nowhere else.
My dmesg reports:

I have no idea even where to begin how to fix this problem. My mpg123
program reports:

I have no /etc/init.d/pulseaudio service to start. It complains when I
try to start it as root, and when I try to start it as a normal user:
michael@caitlyn mp3 $ pulseaudio --start
D: [pulseaudio] conf-parser.c: Parsing configuration file
'/etc/pulse/client.conf'
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
michael@caitlyn mp3 $

What am I missing here? On my previous PC I couldn't get pulseaudio to
work right, so I disabled it (USE="-pulseaudio"), but on caitlyn when I
do that I lose sound in mplayer, so I guess it's not an option.
Pulseaudio is TRYING to start (I can tell by the 1248 lines in
/var/log/messages that I grepped for pulseaudio and today's date.)
What's my next step?
