[LINUX_Newbies] root can't access X in su session

I feel really dumb about asking this, but most of the time I have a
terminal open with several tabs. Tab #1 is always running a su session
so that I can do my daily backup maintenance. Every time I try to use
any X app under the su, I get this:

oot@caitlyn:/backup/caitlyn/201612# file-roller
caitlyn-slackware-michael-20161220.tar.bz2
GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings
will not be saved or shared with other applications.
No protocol specified

** (file-roller:16500): CRITICAL **: Failed to parse arguments: Cannot
open display:
root@caitlyn:/backup/caitlyn/201612#

I've tried running xhost + and xhost +localhost before issuing the su
command. I'm on Slackware. Very new to it as well. Any help would be
appreciated...

[LINUX_Newbies] Display problem on new slackware install

I try to run thunderbird. It crashes silently. But when I try to run
it from the terminal it spits this out before it dies:

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyError: cannot open display: :0

Any thoughts? Also any advice on how to acquire several packages I
need, such as mozilla-seamonkey and gnome's file-roller and gnumeric?
They don't seem to exist in slacks package manager...

[LINUX_Newbies] Why can't I log into xfce?

I just moved from Gentoo to Slackware. I used xfce4 for my desktop
environment on Gentoo. It was what I was comfortable with. Now I'm
using KDE on Slack. I managed to install xfce4 on my slack box, but
every time I try to select it and boot into it, the screen flashes and
dumps me back at the login prompt. I have no idea why this is
happening. Also, I grepped /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if I could get
any clue as to why this is happening, and I saw:

root@caitlyn:~# grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I logged out, and logged back in, and now thunderbird works. I still
need the others though...

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Slack problems

I left Red Hat/Fedora camp in 2005 because I couldn't keep up with them.  At the time, there was a thread going on their mailing list about Elitist Chowderheads and not being one.  I went with Gentoo because it worked well on legacy systems and that's primarily what I have.

Ah, in that case, stay away from Arch, they're probably more judgemental.

I don't mind effort that much.  I'm just very tired of getting griped at for not doing some thing that I didn't even know I was supposed to do before I asked my question.  I've heard that slack folks aren't as judgemental as Gentoo folks...

I'm not familiar with that one. Slackware itself has slapt-get or
something similar. There are several distributions that probably require
less effort on your part though, from the obvious like Mint and Ubuntu to
things like Arch, which isn't all that complicated to set up.

I re-downloaded the LiveUSB image and was able to boot it after a few
tries. I have corrected my grub config and have successfully booted off
the hard drive. Now I'm trying to find out which package manager it
uses, so I can get the packages I use every day installed...

UPDATE: I just rebooted again, and the prompt says "memory/union #" It
says the hit Control+Alt+Delete to restart the computer, but when I type
anything, there's no response. It did something like this back in
April. I'm pretty sure that it will resolve itself in time, but I don't
really want to wait that long. I use my Linux system daily.

[LINUX_Newbies] Slack problems

OK. I've decided that I'm tired of messing with Gentoo. There's just
too many things I don't understand about it, and I simply don't have
either the time or the attention span to mess with it anymore. I wiped
Gentoo off my box (after backing it up my my 2TB external drive) and
installed slackex off a LiveUSB that I made back in April when I got
this computer. I've rebooted it about thirty times in the past two
hours. Grub claims that it can't find my kernel. I installed slack on
/dev/sda4. I ran /root/install-boot.sh on /dev/sda4 /dev/sda. I
mounted /dev/sda4 and looked to see that the kernel filename was indeed
what grub was trying to load. It wasn't. Grub was trying to load my
kernel plus "-huge". I manually changed grub.cfg and rebooted again.
Same error. I rebooted with my LiveUSB. X failed to start. I rebooted
with the LiveUSB again. A whole bunch of stuff failed. I'm pretty sure
the prompt said something like "memory/files" At this moment I have NO
linux system AT ALL. Please help. I'm trying to think about this the
way a normal non-Gentoo user would, but I'm having great difficulty
doing so. Just trying not to panic too much at this moment.
