[LINUX_Newbies] Easiest, most basic distro for an old, slow laptop

I have an old HP Pavilion laptop that originally had Windows XP. It has a whopping 256MB of RAM. Which of the most popular distros will run on it, even if I have to look for an old release? I know Puppy and antiX are made for old PCs, but they are not popular and a bit arcane. Can I find an old release or Ubuntu or Mint that would work? I've tried them and I'm somewhat familiar with both. But I'm open to suggestions as long as it's not a distro that is hard to learn.
