[LINUX_Newbies] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 on my computer

I found an article that described a similar problem except that his machine was running Win 10.  He solved it by turning Acpi off in grub.  To do this he says at the point just before where my system hangs I should press "e" instead of "continue".  This will take me to a file in grub where I can edit "Acpi=on" to "Acpi=off".  Then after pressing "F10" I can continue with the installation.  Unfortunately pressing "e" on my machine doesn't do anything.  Nor does pressing any other letter.  Apparently my installation hasn't progressed at this point to where I can find grub to edit it.  Any help will be much appreciated.

Jerry

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 on my computer

I have 2 identical laptop computers one with win 8.0 and one with Ibuntu 16. There are issues with UEFI Bios between the two OS. I cannot transfer the HD form one computer to the other without altering BIOS settings.

Search internet with the following string: ubuntu dual boot windows 7

There are several sources that should be of help.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 on my computer

Are you attempting to run both systems as a dual boot, or wanting to replace the Win 7 with Ubuntu?
Are you installing Ubuntu from a USB drive?

In the late 90's and early double oughts, I think the yahoo groups were
fairly important. I made many friends in real life that began on a martial
arts list and put the two tech groups that I co-owned on my resume.
These days everyone uses forums and I don't think any of the groups I'm on,
get more than ten posts in a year. Still they're a part of my past and
assuming it's true--Jeff is right, as always---HI JEFF!!

To continue, one shouldn't click on clickbait, but I will miss the more
rowdy days when they mattered, flame wars were common, and on the martial
arts list I belonged to, a few guys kept challenging others to meet and
fight. :)

Hrrm, that may have been an AOL group. Regardless it's a part of my past.

Slugos downloads were always kept on www.slug-firmware.net. That domain name is now up for grabs on Godaddy. Does anyone possess or know of any source for any of that material? I am trying to upgrade a Slug from SlugOS4.8 to 5.3 (so as to have a clean copy to trace a problem I am having on another 5.3 Slug).

The WayBack Machine does not have it, but it did have the following list of what should be there:

  • 2010-01-30 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.4 Release
  • 2009-09-04 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.3 Release
  • 2009-06-27 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.2 Release
  • 2009-04-11 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.1 Release
  • 2009-03-07 - SlugOS 5.3-beta Release
  • 2009-02-14 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0 Release
  • 2008-02-18 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r3 Release
  • 2007-12-31 - Unslung 6.10-beta Release
  • 2007-12-30 - SlugOS 4.8-beta Release
  • 2007-12-29 - OpenWrt/NSLU2 Kamikaze 7.09 Release
  • 2007-12-28 - Angstrom/NSLU2 2007.12 Release
  • 2007-12-27 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r2 Release
  • 2007-07-23 - OpenWrt/NSLU2 Kamikaze 7.07 Release
  • 2007-04-08 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r0 Release
  • 2006-06-10 - SlugOS 3.10-beta Release
  • 2006-04-12 - Unslung 6.8-beta Release
It would be a pity if this stuff were lost forever.

The main nslu2-linux.org site still exists, and you can still download additional modules using opkg (it might even be possible to recover much of the OS from there).

So please have a look around your ancient dumps, etc.

Subject: Re: [nslu2-linux] Slugos binaries & source lost

I still have a number of NSLU2 related (binary) downloads including:

    md5sum = 3e06813a8d4bf07c7f7f6b745d7cf6a4    SlugOSBE-5.3-beta-firmware.zip    (6013169 bytes)

If that is any help? But I am afraid that I do not seem to have the source code to go with this binary distribution

I also have copies of the following NSLU2 "UnSlung" firmwares, dating from around 2004 to 2006:

    md5sum = 2fa587a7d4e05cca9b8dd758f5d2106d    NSLU2-ReleaseNotes.txt
    md5sum = 6eb8332d49b86511e0d9a736953ca00c  NSLU2_V23R29.bin                (8388608 bytes)
    md5sum = 37b20540b0057ee0ee252f3f6034a0e6    NSLU2_V23R29.zip                (4189925 bytes)
    md5sum = 423f65fb2121bbf9855d060dce29b3af      NSLU2_V23R63.zip                (6586684 bytes)
    md5sum = fb1665ad062ef60e5f76258bdc0fde7d      NSLU2_V23R72.zip                (6454570 bytes)
   md5sum = 7c91364396a9fbfba1e1d158595e06a6    nslu2-fw-2.3r25.zip                  (4197920 bytes)

And some NSLU2 Debian-related downloads too it seems dated around 2011 to 2013

    md5sum = 1f4bda863f3f7acf9c8008d349e1ebc3       debian-armel-5.0.4.zip    (4923428 bytes)
    md5sum = 479f1fbf3eb5c7f80f358728d3e7b080        debian-armel-5.0.9.zip    (4928773 bytes)
    md5sum = 020298648cc6a378a6686ec07f17b023    di-nslu2.bin                    (8388608 bytes)

Cheers
Ian

P.S.I also have no less than 3 NSLU2 knocking around somewhere

Slugos downloads were always kept on www.slug-firmware.net. That domain name is now up for grabs on Godaddy. Does anyone possess or know of any source for any of that material? I am trying to upgrade a Slug from SlugOS4.8 to 5.3 (so as to have a clean copy to trace a problem I am having on another 5.3 Slug).

The WayBack Machine does not have it, but it did have the following list of what should be there:

  • 2010-01-30 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.4 Release
  • 2009-09-04 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.3 Release
  • 2009-06-27 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.2 Release
  • 2009-04-11 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0.1 Release
  • 2009-03-07 - SlugOS 5.3-beta Release
  • 2009-02-14 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 5.0 Release
  • 2008-02-18 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r3 Release
  • 2007-12-31 - Unslung 6.10-beta Release
  • 2007-12-30 - SlugOS 4.8-beta Release
  • 2007-12-29 - OpenWrt/NSLU2 Kamikaze 7.09 Release
  • 2007-12-28 - Angstrom/NSLU2 2007.12 Release
  • 2007-12-27 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r2 Release
  • 2007-07-23 - OpenWrt/NSLU2 Kamikaze 7.07 Release
  • 2007-04-08 - Debian/NSLU2 Stable 4.0r0 Release
  • 2006-06-10 - SlugOS 3.10-beta Release
  • 2006-04-12 - Unslung 6.8-beta Release
It would be a pity if this stuff were lost forever.

The main nslu2-linux.org site still exists, and you can still download additional modules using opkg (it might even be possible to recover much of the OS from there).

So please have a look around your ancient dumps, etc.
