You are over-thinking this statement. It does not have to mean Ubuntu
*developed*, but could also mean *included* with Ubuntu. That would include
apt-get, etc. I also think that you are under-estimating Software Centre
which handles the chores or Synaptic and gdebi as well as pushing content.
It sounds like you have an axe to grind.

I read that article and I am wondering what the author of it meant by this line, "Don't worry, all the standard Ubuntu package management tools are here for you to use."

The only software that could even remotely be called a package management tool that Canonical has written that I've heard of is the Ubuntu Software Center, and it is more a content pushing mechanism than a utility to me.

Now back to the whole which distribution works the best on a low resource system theme. I run Debian Lenny on my P3 here. A while back when the RAM module in it went bad I managed to get into X Window on the 22 MB of remaining good RAM that system had. Something I didn't even think was possible today, but just the desktop ran fine. I did experience some sluggishness when I tried to start a web browser, Iceweasel (Debian's FireFox). It wasn't until then that I even knew there was anything wrong with that computer.

That system is pretty customized and built for a specific purpose. So just slapping Lenny on a machine no one is going to get quite the performance I experienced. It still happened though:

Thanks for your input. I will try this if all else fails. I have Unbuntu 10 and 11 successfully installed on slightly more modern machines (P4).

Ubuntu is the choice for a cad package. The veterans' group I belong to is using a cad package and building numeric control machines to help returning vets here in Spokane. I am trying to avoid the problem of spreading out to mulltiple versions of Linux. We get occasional donations of old computers. So far i have tried:
1 Fedora.
2 Slacko Puppy
3 Unbuntu (various versions).

I have the option of falling back to version 7 ubuntu - which installed sucessrully, but was difficult to update to its full potental.

in more detail:

Booting up just yields a black screen and no response from mouse or keyboard.

So I:
1.Ran a memory test to see if the memory was an issue. - The memory checked good. No help.
2.Booted to a command prompt with the aid of the Gnome recovery option. At this point I entered startx. A bunch of stuff flashed on the screen (at light speed) and I ended up back at the command prompt. When I rebooted (without gnome) , I ended up with same blank screen with unresponsive mouse and keyboard No help.
3.In the gnome recovery option, I choose dkpg (repair broken packages). This resulted in a series of messages that stated “failed to fetch --------”. I am stuck back at the command prompt again. No help.
4.I found some stuff on Google which I tried

sudo apt-get update (result: a bunch of error messages and a reply that I try get update)
sudo apt-get upgrade (result: a bunch of error messages and a reply that I try get update)
sudo apt-get install ubuntu desktop (result â€" it built some sort of dependency tree â€" then a bunch of error messages.) No help

I read something about acpi=off and the F6 key. I will try that nex
