This is being crossposted to linux@, redhat@, and linux_newbies@
careful with your replies. :)
Apologies for the cross post, but some of the replies to the bug, which
strike me as completely asinine, have aggravated me enough so that I'd
like to reach as many as possible.
At any rate, as you Fedora users know, at some point (around F10, I
think) Fedora once again chose bling over usefulness, and decided to
make grub have a 0 timeout by default. While not that difficult to work
around, it's one of those stupid desktop distro decisions that no one
heard about until it was too late.
Recently, a few of us got aggravated enough to file a bug report. As
Fedora claims to be a community distribution, we figured let them hear
what the community thinks. As it is often, for one reason or another,
necessary to add something to the kernel line in order to simply get the
darn thing to boot, it seems that it would be easier for both the
experienced and the newcomer if it simply had a 3 second default
timeout. As it is, sometimes, various key presses will stop it at the
menu so that you can edit. At other times, either the timing has to be
exactly, or with various combinations (some virtual machines, some USB
KVM switch combos, etc.,) make it unresponsive to key presses.
Honestly, the arguments against it, and the various complex solutions,
strike me as a bit absurd. All the arguments saying it's relatively
easy to change seem to ignore what *I* would consider common sense.
If it's easy to change, then, if you get really excited at shaving 3
seconds off boot time, use one of these easy methods. If it doesn't
boot though, why add further aggravation to what is already an
aggravating experience.
So, if any of you have a RedHat bugzilla account, you can vote for the
bug. (If you don't have one, and use RH/Fedora, or even CentOS, it's
often worth getting one--registration is fairly easy.)
At any rate, anyone who wishes to vote/comment on the bug can view it at
https://bugzilla.
If you do comment, please try to keep it polite. Nothing closes a
person's mind more quickly than calling them stupid. :)
