But beware in some states like where Im at Michigan is a FELONY if you decide to steal off neighbors weather you ask too or not.
I would look up rules in your area before trying too. Not a good choice it could lead to big fines inculded. Some cable and dsl company track the usage.

Netzero(http://www.netzero.net/start/landing.do?page=www/free/index) has FREE Dial-Up Internet Access 10 hours per month for you to just look at email or some browsing. But 10 hours isnt that much but if you only need it for email that just good.
Then they nag at you to goto there premium service.

Well if you have USB WIFI(i.e Netgear works under linux not much more then $30 range) go to your local Micky D's(McDonalds) or Coffee shop or local library

As for linux goes for easy for newbie I would say Linux Mint(Ubuntu Based) OR Ubuntu/Kubuntu
