Re: [LINUX_Newbies] NO SOUND OUTPUT

I've has sound problems in Windows, too. If you don't have the right driver
then you get no sound irrespective of the OS.

Most Linux sound problems have to do with: 1) sound being muted by default,
2) not enabling the sound output channel 3) PulseAudio which does not play
well with some hardware 4) wrong driver

The solution for the first one is to uncheck the mute box and sliding the
slider all the way up. Many people overlook the obvious. Left click on the
speaker icon in the system tray.

The solution for the second one is to right click on the same icon. This
time choose Show Mixer Window. Make sure all of the sliders are up and not
muted. You can also add sliders by further clicking on Settings and
Configure Kmix.

The solution for the third one is to open Synaptic and search (not quick
search) for PulseAudio. Remove it (just remove pulseaudio and it will remove
the other parts as well) which leaves you with ALSA and it is tried and true
with all hardware. If it still does not work then you can try to install
ALSA firmware also from Synaptic.

The fourth is least likely but the one that most people start with because
it is the most common problem with Windows, where you need to post install
drivers. In Linux detection and drivers are provided in the kernel.
Typically you don't add drivers afterwards. The thing to do here is to check
what hardware is being detected as and if there is a driver installed by
opening a terminal and typing lshw. Scroll back to the section for audio. It
will say after the words Description: Multimendia audio controller or
similar. It will tell what hardware is available. At the end of that section
it should have a configuration line where the driver is listed. If no driver
is listed then you need to install one.

To do that you go to System, Hardware drivers. It will let you know if one
is available. If not, then you may have to compile one from source code or
get it from the manufacturer if they provide one.
