Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Debian and Firefox

Hey thanks Scott. I managed to get a really cool Linux systems administrator hot-shot guy in Spain on my IM. He took me line-by-line, extracting, creating directories, compiling, and then finally, Scott, he showed me how to create an icon.

In Debian Lenny, an icon is created with right-click --> Create Launcher. Enter the command, and give the soon-to-be icon a name. Pretty simple.

I wrote down some of the commands to do this stuff, some, not. No doubt I'll need help again soon!!!

tar zxvf firefox- (and if you hit the tab key, it should complete the
name of the file)..

You'll see stuff happening on the screen.
You should now have a directory on your desktop called firefox. In
there is a firefox wrapper script (that is, a shell script that calls
the binary, the actual application. )

Now, I run most things from command line or keyboard shortcuts, so I'm
not sure how you can make it into an icon that you can click on, but you
can start firefox by

cd Desktop
firefox/firefox

That command will call the firefox script inside the new firefox
directory.

It will probably actually have your bookmarks and preferences, as it
tends to use your $HOME/.mozilla directory.
