I have a laptop that had crashed on ubuntu Linux with gnome and would not reboot again. I managed to get that screen you just described but nothing happens when I press the buttons on the menu. Any help?

manager (it might say boot options or something similar) and a different key

You have to restart your computer pressing F8 and you will get into the
BIOS. In one of the BIOS menus there is an option that allows you to choose
the boot device, it is disabled by default in Acer One. Enable it. Save the
changes and exit. Plug in the USB stick and restart the computer pressing
F12. Choose to boot from USB and that's it.
