I run Mint on my notebook and have installed it on 5 year old notebooks
with one gig. Works great. I even installed it on a relatively fast
USB thumb drive to run on a Dell netbook and it performed acceptably.
I use Ubuntu on my desktop and am relatively certain it will work fine.
Given no knowledge of what kind of laptop you are considering it is
a bit tough to tell. Both Ubuntu and Mint come with XFCE and LXDE
versions which minimize requirements.
