Linux is NOT Windows. Do NOT download applications from individual web sites
such as Mozilla. Ubuntu applications are placed in secure and maintained
repositories. To install them you use a package manager. Ubuntu comes with
two of them, Synaptic and Software Centre. You can use either, but not both
at the same time. You need to provide your password. To install
applications. Unlike Windows you don't choose where to install. Applications
are installed in protected folders in the root file system.
Synaptic is located in System, Administration in the Menu and Software
Centre is at the bottom of the main menu. They are different in the way they
look. Both are menu oriented, but Software Centre is easier to use for new
users. Synaptic shows more information.
Firefox will be located in the Internet, Web Browsers in Software Centre and
in Synaptic you can search (not quick search) for Firefox. The way it works
is you select the application and click on Install. Then you can choose
other applications.when you are done click on Apply.
It is best that you forget how you did things in Windows. The Linux
community is great and they will help you with anything you ask help for.
One reason why Linux is more secure than Windows is the way we install
applications. It will take some getting used to, but it is easier than
search the internet or going to the store to choose applications from menus.
