Interestingly enough, those systems probably ran just as well--the bloat
these days is absurd.
You could still try Ubuntu, though something like Arch might be a better
choice. Although it's a bit harder to set up, and unlike FeBuntu (as I
call it, or the more euphonious UbuDora, for the desktop type
distributions)
or Ubuntu, and pretty straightforward.
Other options to try, puppy Linux which will definitely run, and run
well.
