My guess, as the OP said 9", is that it's not a USB CD drive. My wife
had one of the Sony ultralights around that time (Win98, not 95) and it
had an external CD (at a $200 extra cost) that had a smart-card-like
attachment. (I'm not sure what you'd call it, it was a flat thing,
reminiscent of a smart card--this was many years ago, so I don't
remember it well.
