These days, much hardware support is in the form of modules, that is,
little pieces of code that get added when needed by the hardware. They
usually have a .ko suffix.

It may even be that the driver wasn't deleted, but the module simply
unloaded, in which case, it can be reloaded with modprobe, <module_name>,
e.g., modprobe ath_pci.

If you give more specifics about the situation, someone can probably
offer more help.
