Dude... Linux should work well on pretty much any laptop you buy. The
things to watch out for that can cause issues (but are still workable)
nVidia video chipsets and in some cases Broadcom and Atheros wireless
cards...
As far as processors, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (and did run 9.10) on
my current work laptop with a quad core i7...
I've run Linux on systems with up to 64 processors (4 8-core chips w/
hyperthreading enabled) and up to 1TB of RAM.
The cheap laptops usually work great, and used ones equally well
(again, with the caution about possible issues with graphics and
wireless networking, both of which can be worked around).
