This depends upon the distribution--should work with RH based
distributions, and PCLinuxOS is, IIRC, from Mandrake, which came from
RH, so that should work. Others, such as Gentoo, will ask for the root
password before allowing you to do anything.

If PCLinuxOS doesn't allow the single user mode method, you can boot with
puppy, mount the installation you want to
change, do a chroot into it, and set the password there.

I have an outdated page (it was for resetting Ubuntu's grub if you
installed a Fedora, a common issue on Fedora forums, but doesn't work
with the grub2 that Ubuntu now uses, hence, its outdatedness, if there
is such a word), that covers doing chroot. You can follow that, and
once you're in the chroot environment, reset the password if the single
user mode boot doesn't work.

Giles: I suspect your mother would want to... put it on the
refrigerator.
Buffy: Yeah. She saw these scores and her head spun around and
exploded.
Giles: I've been on the Hellmouth too long, that was metaphorical,
yes?
Buffy: Yes.
