Power-only USB supplies are common (you can get them at Wal-Mart.) My
wife's cell phone was charged using one of those plug-in supplies, and
we purchased another that fits into the cigarette lighter.
We have at least one MP3 player that refuses to play when plugged into a
real USB port (it goes into 'USB drive' mode,) but play (and charges)
fine when powered by a supply (not the computer.)
I like USB chargable items because it's more convenient (and
inexpensive) than dealing with batteries.
