Well, welcome to the world ;-) Now, first, a word of advice, learn to
use Google. Of course we're here to help, BUT some well targeted
google-fu will get you a lot of background info that will help both
you and us, not to mention that you may even find a fix on your own
and can then share that with the rest of us and tell us your own "I
had a problem, and this is how I learned to fix it" story :)
Now, a quick search turns up this:
http://www.sierrawireless.com/en/productsandservices/AirCard/SoftwareSolutions/aircardossupport.aspx#linuxembedded
There are several different things called a Compass aircard, all of
which on that chart seem to be supported under various linuxes...
which card do you have?
What version of Ubuntu are you running?
What exactly do you mean by "It will recognize that I have the card
when I plug it into the usb slot, but that is as far as I can go."
What is as far as you can go? Be more descriptive. How do you know
that "it" recognizes the card when you plug it in?
And please try to not use the word "it" if you can help it. Not
trying to be a grammar nazi, but overuse of the word "it" makes
descriptions hard to understand... try to be as clear as you can.
The reason I ask about what you meant, is that some of those aircards
also come with a little bit of USB flash on them, and those cards show
up as storage devices as well as network devices. So it is entirely
possible to have an aircard that shows up as a USB storage device, but
not as a USB Cellular Networking Device. In those cases... the system
only recognizes one function, instead of both functions... But in any
case, all the things that Sierra lists under the name Compass seem to
be supported by Ubuntu (as far as THEY say at least).
Also, hope one of the others can chime in here as well, because
honestly, I've never used one of those usb air cards before... I just
use wi-fi when I can find it (where I live, one of those cards would
be useless because cellular reception is all but nonexistant)...
Cheers,
Jeff
