Kernel panics can happen for any number of reasons. I have an HP desktop and
have seen more than my share. What I usually do when this happens is try to
detect what is wrong, by doing a boot into text mode. You have to watch the
boot process and see where the kernel panic occurs. Then I try a boot
parameter to work around it.

To boot into text mode, I press F6 on the grub screen and then a line
appears near the bottom. I scroll to the end and remove the word "quiet" and
all text to the end of the line. When I have done this I follow the prompt
at the bottom that tells you what to press to boot. I forget the exact
wording. Now instead of seeing nothing, you will have text scroll by. When
the kernel panic happens see if it is after some graphics or disk activity.

Common boot parameters that can improve your chances of getting a good boot
are found on the F6 popup. You can also type your own where you removed
"quiet".

If this does not work then I would consider trying a different distro. For
some reason some hardware does not match up well with certain distros.
Remember that unlike Windows where OEMS tweak their hardware to work with
the OS, Linux distros are made to work generically with a broad range of
hardware. You may need to do the tweaking yourself.
