Ubuntu but not Debian, unless you are fond of breaking your system. Ubuntu
is based on Debian, but you can't share repositories either.
Debian has three streams, lenny, squeeze and sid. Ubuntu and therefore Mint
is based on sid, but Debian does not recommend sid for everyday use. Ubuntu
gets around this problem by repackaging and testing its packages thoroughly.
Mint solves the problem by letting Ubuntu do the work for it. Nothing wrong
with that because Ubuntu is forked many times over and it is part of the
Linux tradition. :)
There is a Debian based Mint, that came out recently. It is a trial balloon
and not part of the main Mint distribution. We'll see how that goes. Debian
is a rolling release and that should make Mint's job a lot easier. It has
its own installer and not Debian's harder to use one. It uses squeeze or the
testing branch which is not as sta(b)le as Debian lenny, but not as fresh as
Ubuntu.
