Hi, It was just a precaution as I had a problem when I installed ubunto on the
same hd. It took over the mbr ( master boot record ) and I could not boot into
win xp. Ended up reformating and aquired a 2nd hd. So when I installed linux on
the 2nd hd, I disconnected win xp hd as a precaution.
When you boot after the install with both hd's running you should get a linux
boot menu. With me Linux always boots first now and I have to change the option
to boot to win xp.
I suggest that you place linux on another drive.

My pc a compaq presario which allows me to dual boot with a menu on startup.
Cannot remember if I had to download the app from hp/compaq, or if it was in the
bios. Just a tip, when you install linux on the other hd, disconnect you windows
hd, just incase linux takes over the mbr. Boot from the linux cd and install on
the hd you selected. Once done then reconnect your windows hd. Rather safe than
sorry.

Re: [nslu2-linux] Re: rtorrent error on unslung
Thanks, Roman and Brian. I'm successfully running Transmission 1.76 on unslung 6.10 writing files to an NTFS partition. It's a great lightweight client, and the built-in web client is quite handy. Remote Windows client is a bonus.
Thanks for the assistance!
I uploaded transmission 1.76-1 ipk for unslung firmware here

RE: [nslu2-linux] NSLU2 shutdown problem
I’ve noticed, that when using an external USB drive that uses an external USB power supply, that when my NSLU2 tries to power down, the external power supply keeps it powered up, but in the blinking power LED state.
So, if there is no external drive and USB power, it shuts down to off…and with USB power attached, it shuts down to the flashing power LED mode. If I unplug the USB power supply (but keep the regular NSLU2 power supply attached) it will power down to off

I think I found a way around this that works at least in my case using the power mod I made. If I do a
shutdown -hH now
It shuts down and then sits there alternately blinking the power light from green to yellow at which point you can shutoff the power by pulling the power plug.

On the NSLU2, there is no "halt" as such -- the processor sets a GPIO
pin to a state that "pulls the plug", and kills the processor.
You don't state which of the 12 or 13 (or is it more by now?) power mods
you have implemented, but it seems to me that whichever one it is, it's
'glitchy' and causes the hardware to re-power up after the GPIO turns it
off.
(AFAIK, Debian uses the same kernel as all the other firmwares, but if
that is not true, then this could be due to some difference in the way
Debian handles power-off --- all I can say is that my modified unit with
SlugOS works as expected.)

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Dual boot-up
As part of the installation process the Linux distribution write a menu to
the MBR of the first boot drive. This will give you a choice at boot time
between the various operating systems. Linux can share a drive or it can be
installed on the separate drive. It is your choice and ultimately depends on
the size of the drive and how full it is. It is a good idea to defrag
Windows first, if you plan on sharing the Windows drive.

[nslu2-linux] Re: unable to get cross compile environment to build existing packages like ffmpeg
It looks like ffmpeg.mk as it is in /trunk is missing a line that loads a critical patch, that oddly enough is already there in the patch directory..
changing line 51 from
FFMPEG_PATCHES=
to
FFMPEG_PATCHES= $(FFMPEG_SOURCE_DIR)/ffmpeg-swscale-headers.patch
seems to do the trick.

Re: [nslu2-linux] NSLU2 shutdown problem
I thought the same thing and my bad that I did not document which of the growing mods I performed when I did it over a year ago. I think that is the problem. I either need to get in there and change the mod or write some code that puts it in a loop after the system is properly shutdown. No big deal. It does what I really wanted it to do and that is recover and reboot at any power failure since I use it for remote temperature sensing.
Thanks and Happy New Year, Doug

Does it support the -u option which pauses for 5 minutes (for a UPS poweroff) before actually attempting to power down?

It seems like something might be broken in the source as some others have had trouble building their packages as well, I am getting the same type of errors found in this thread. http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-234713

You shouldn't need to go into the BIOS. Most Linux distributions will
see a Windows installation and, during installation, will offer to set
up a dual boot.
Of course, it's always good to make sure you have a back up, but most
modern installations handle this without a problem. Then, when you
boot, you are offered the choice of which system to use.
