Another really nice graphical environment is Enlightenment. A new distro called Bodhi Linux uses it (and there are some others).
Englightenment runs very quickly and uses surprisingly few resources, yet it has loads of "eye candy" if you like that sort of thing.
Personally, in this case I suggest Lubuntu. You will likely still have to install some of the GTK and/or QT libraries to run some of the apps you want that are designed either for Gnome or KDE. However, even then you should have the space. The most critical issue is likely the amount of RAM on the machine, but either LXDE or Englightenment should do the trick.
XFCE has the reputation of being a "light weight" environment, but tests I saw about a year ago indicated that it uses about the same memory footprint as Gnome these days. That was a rather unpleasant shock to me at the time.
