Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: People say PCLinuxOS is more windows like in feel and look but not Ubuntu

Windows may be the best seller, but Mac OS/X is considered the gold standard
or OSes for its elegance and design quality. The company that makes Ubuntu,
Canonical, and particularly its founder, Mark Shuttleworth, have been
accused of having Mac envy. Not everyone agrees with him, particularly Linux
hardcore users, who think that Linux should not be chasing Windows or OS/X
but finding its own path.

At the moment there is a bit of a wedge between Ubuntu and other GNOME
distributions, who think a) that Ubuntu does not contribute enough upstream
to GNOME and b) that Ubuntu is commercialising Linux. These are all
arguable, but that is the common perception. It does not help that Ubuntu
keeps on shooting itself in the foot, by migrating away from GNOME at a time
when GNOME is coming out with its biggest overhaul in a decade and have
announced plans to split from Xorg as soon as a rival X manager, Wayland, is
ready. Then last week they set off alarms by announcing that they will be
taking 75% of the revenue from Banshee's deal with Amazon music store when
this had previously been donated to GNOME. Banshee is a GNOME project and
scheduled for inclusion in Ubuntu 11.04. This is still smouldering as I
write.

Linux is not easy, but the politics of it all is trickier to navigate and
Ubuntu for some reason always seems to find itself in the middle of some
mess or other. Try Linux Mint. It is Ubuntu without the hassle and it works
well for Windows users. :)
