Do you know the make and model number of your modem (or motherboard if
built in)? We could try searching through some "bug reports" with that
info and seeing if any hits turn up.
There seems to be one reported solution here:
http://forums.techguy.org/linux-unix/927230-solved-trouble-setting-up-dialup.html
But it looks like the beginning of that link is installing four .deb
files that are on the linux CD, And if I remember correctly, that is
one spot where you got hung up at because you could not get the cd to
mount...
I don't mean to have you backtracking if you've already given that
route up, but it may be worth revisiting. Another way to install from
the CD is to add the CD to your sources. I've done this in the past,
but am a little fuzzy on the details. I'm thinking if you just dump
the CD in the drive, there is a box you can check.. but may need to
add it manually to etc/sources.list file... Alternatively, if you
provide the link with instructions you were following, and point out
where it didn't work for you, I (or someone smarter) might be able to
figure out what was going wrong there...
Hope you manage to not pull your hair out over this... :)
