Wow, I completely forgot about the lacking buttons in Gnome 3. I
remember reading about their rationale for doing that in amazement.
One fell swoop to turn a highly functional desktop into the equivalent
of what the Windows Mobile operating system has been since 2003. I
can see what they are trying to move towards, though...

Hmm... there was mention of something about Altray. I was thinking
the OP wanted to minimize to launcher or window list (i.e., show
desktop). I should revise my statement to say I have no idea if
LXDE/openbox has a way to drop things to a system tray. It does allow
single-click minimization of all open windows to the window-list
panel. And individual windows of course have the minimize button.
@Jerry, it may help if you clarify a bit, whether you are trying to
drop programs to a "system tray" or just "minimize" them to the botom
window panel/dock w/o closing them... These two options would have
very different paths to take for a resolution and would probably limit
the "desktop list" you are looking for if it is the former...
