I prefer Mint or PcLinuxOS, but I used to fiddle with Knoppix, but it's been awhile. I just watched a DVD movie with Puppy LuPu after taking out the Puppy Live CD, and I have no hard drive in this laptop.

I made the mistake recently of trying to run aptitude safe-upgrade on a live distro. System ran out of "disk space". Whoops!
It was on a laptop with only 1GB of RAM. I still haven't installed anything to the HDD yet. I'm torn between Ubuntu and Debian. Normally I wouldn't consider running Ubuntu, but I have to admit it ran live pretty good and if I went with Ubuntu I could have KDE 3.5 packaged even so it is a tough decision.
It is going to be a lot of time setting it up either way I go. Ubuntu and strip it down or Debian and build it up ... this is hard! Then again with Ubuntu I'll likely learn things I'd rather not and Debian I'll learn things I probably should.
I guess I should burn a Debian CD and see how it runs on the hardware. The dumb laptop can't boot off USB. I hate wasting discs.
