Re: [LINUX_Newbies] New features in 11.04

I cannot speak to 11.04. I am now on 11.10. I tried Unity in 11.04 and found
it lacking. Oneiric offers a fuller experience and you can see where they
are headed with this. It is still not quite there IMO, but I like what they
are doing. There are two types of users that will like Unity. Power users
will love the keyboard shortcuts which are numerous and integration.
Smartphone users will like the intuitiveness and polish. Traditional desktop
users will be frustrated because it just works differently and you need to
get your head around a new way of doing things. This IS the way of the
future, but often we are not ready for it. It takes times and patience.

A difference between 11.04 and 11.10 is Alt-F2. In Natty it did not work
properly, but it is now fully integrated. Ctrl_Alt_T will bring up a
terminal. The Windows or Super key will bring up the Launcher, a tap will
bring up Dash. a list can be found here:

It is only partial.

In Natty you could not drag and drop icons to the launcher or delete or move
them from the Launcher. In other words this was just an idea and it is
bearing fruit in Oneiric. The Dash was restrcted as well. Now it has lots of
Lenses (think Places) and Filters (subgroups) that simplify searches and
finding icons. Also after typing a couple of letter Dash starts to present
you with choices. That did not work in Natty.

Users wishing to try Unity should avoid Natty. It will leave a bad taste in
your mouth.

It is great to hear from you, Ian. How are things in the UK? It is wet and
cool here. No frost yet, thankfully for my garden. I still have tomatoes and
peppers on the go. I have been splitting and moving perennials and
composting annuals and cuttings when not online.

I have been following your posts and enjoy what I have seen, but have so far
remained silent. I know that you can hold your own. I have been active in
social media and the forums have been quite quiet all around.
