[LINUX_Newbies] permissions

 

hi group

I hope everyone is well.

I have another question, this is concerning permissions.

I need to run software that auto boots up if the computers shuts down after a reset, the software i'm running needs to write to a log, however when i launch it i get the following error.

cannot open/var/log/dvrptrrepeater-2012-06-14.log file for appending

when i look at details i get.

cannot open/var/log/dvrptrrepeater-2012-06-14.log (error 13 permission denied)

can anyone help please.
i am logged in as user alan@ubuntu

incidentally if i want to make changes to the software config file i have to run sudo<filename>
