I hear that, Dude.
The main thing that I was liking about Software Center was the ability to
find what I wanted, as far as the front end programs go. Then, I was
liking the fact that I wasn't pulling up very much of the obsolete stuff as
I often seem to come across. Also - and, perhaps, I'm wrong about this -
there also seemed to be an improvement in quality.
I, too, prefer utility to cosmetic design. However, there is something to
be said about user friendly: It occasionally serves it's purpose. If the
day ever comes that I am on the CLI-for-everything level, that some people
are, I may be able to dispense with it. But, I just ain't there, yet.
In fact, I think that if the Linux community truly wants to go more
mainstream over the legacy garbage, like Windoze, then, they are eventually
going to have to swallow some well-deserved elitist pride and just
accommodate both kinds of users. At least, where it comes to the X-windows
distros. There are just too many helpless idiots out there, who wish to
remain that way. Their stupidity provides the impetus that keeps crap-ware
Microsoft products going.
But, if we can implement "user-friendly" in ways that encourage them to
delve into more expert levels, without running into brick walls, then we
just might create another hobbyist trend that doesn't seem to have been
around since the days of 8-bit computers.
