In a terminal (sorry, don't know another way to do it)
dpkg -l hplip
If it's installed, you should see something like
ii hplip
If you see
un hplip it means it's not installed
In that case
sudo apt-get install hplip
should install what's needed.
There is a graphic package manager, but again, I don't know how to use it,
so can't be of much help there.
