Is there agreement that this is required to install VLC?
Cheers

Probably. Here is the issue with many of these articles, this one included: The author used
a specific version of Ubuntu in conjunction with this article on a specific date. Why does
that matter? He could have been working with Ubuntu 12.04 in May of 2012 when he
wrote this article. The specific links may be identical in Ubuntu 14.04 or they may not. The
*concept* he is trying to get across is sound. You do have to install specific packages in
addition to the Distro install in order to get VLC to work with encrypted video DVDs. Commonly
Movies and TV shows on DVD are encrypted.
So, try doing exactly what he says. If something goes wonky, don't give up and don't assume
the author is an idiot. Just bring back here exactly what worked, what didn't, and any error
messages you received and we will try to help from there. Also, I noted that somebody trimmed
off the description of your machines and which specific version of which Distro. Scott for
instance keeps referring to Mint but I got the impression you had gone to all machines on
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Here is what I am looking for:
Qty 1 of Machine 1
Motherboard ASRock x273984
Memory 1 GB
Video Card: Built into the motherboard
Ubuntu 14.04
VLC works
Qty 2 of Machine 2
Dell Superstuff 2400
Motherboard Dell
Memory 2 GB
Video Card: Built into the motherboard
Ubuntu 1404
VLC fails
Machine 3
Bob, my friendly local computer guy built this one
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-987654-U4-USB v2.0
Memory 4 GB
Video Card: Xfx AMD Radeon HD 5450
Linux Mint 17.0 Mate
VLC fails
etc.
Thanks,
Loyal
Gene,
I don't understand your response. I really would like to help but at times you give very terse
replies that don't really help those of us trying to support you much. Are you saying you
have or will try what the article says?
Thanks,
Loyal
