Thanks for getting back Jeff. Hopefully Yahoo and I are now meeting your stringent requirements and have worked out a plain text arrangement.
Concurrent with my posting here I also contacted the manufacturer in the Ukraine. They too suggested it was likely a problem with permissions.
The link you provided to the article on USB serial ports under wine did the trick. The biggest hurdle was working through the command structure of the VIM editor.
