Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Remove Puppy //Remove 2nd Linux

For future installations of Ubuntu desktops: You do not need to have separate Xubuntu and Ubuntu installations. You can have both installed on the same partition. Basically you just install one or the other, then using the package manager install the other as an alternative desktop. Let's say, that you installed Ubuntu. Then you open the package manager or from the terminal you just sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop. Once it is installed you would logout of Ubuntu and back into Xubuntu where it says 'session' on the desktop manager. To remove Ubuntu would be as simple as removing ubuntu-desktop with the package manager. It does not affect grub2 other than to remove Ubuntu from the list.

You did not appear to do that and it would seem that you have separate installations that require you to go back to grub to change desktops. If this is the case then you may or may not need your installation disk to re-install grub once you remove Ubuntu. You can do that from Xubuntu using the partition editor or file manager as root. Just format over the Ubuntu partition. Then run sudo grub-install /dev/XXX where the XXX is the partition that you want grub on, say sda or sdb. If you cannot boot because it did not work then use the installation disk to do the same thing. You can also do this from rescue Mode in grub2.

You can find complete instructions at help.ubuntu.com and do a search.
