There are a variety of reasons that computers run slow. Here is a list of some of the common ones:
- Insufficient computer memory (you are forever writing to and retrieving temp data from hard drive).
- viruses and malware including 3rd party cookies
- excessive start up programs that are really not needed (they slow down the computer start-up and use memory and processor time)
- The hard drive needs to be defragged (it is looking everywhere to retrieve a single file)
- The trash has not been emptied (This is usually not a problem till you are low on hard drive space)
In general, a good way to learn to deal with these problems is to:
- to use Google to look up the problems
- or see a step-by-step demo on YouTube. They often walk you through it while showing you how the screen looks in the process.
If you are using a recent version Firefox, you may be able to speed up internet operations by using the options.
Click on the 3 horizontal lines on the upper right side of the browser screen
Click on options. Notice you have choices like General search Content Privacy Security
Select the options one by one try some limited changes like;
in Privacy, accept 3rd party cookies NEVER ---- and Clear History when Firefox closes
in Security try the following (if not already set) Warn me when sites try to install add ons--- and block reported attack sites.
Some other suggestions are to install add-on ins Firefox options like
- Ghostery – it gets rid of corporate spying on you
- Adblock – adds slow you down and are annoying.
I hope this helps you get started. Keep in mind getting rid of 3rd party cookies and erasing history has some costs. You will have to write down passwords somewhere and re-enter them.

If your file system is a Linux file system most likely it auto-defrags at night when it's left on. Do you have at least a gigabyte or more of RAM? Do delete any cookies that might be ad-based and so calling home? There's probably more, but I can't recall right now. Do you use Mate, XFCE, or LXDE-core as your Gui?
