In the late 90's and early to mid double oughts, there were many very
active Linux groups, including this one. Unfortunately, at least the few
that I've been involved with, this one, redhat, and linux, gradually lost
activity and are now dead, or almost so, though they still exist.
As for navigating through them, though the groups I mention were already
dying, after Ms Mayer took over, they made some changes which seemed to,
according to those who still posted and made heavy use of the groups,
severely affect functionality.
It seems that a lot of what used to be on mailing lists, espeically those
that welecomed the less experienced, has been replaced by forums.
Both the Ubuntu forums and linuxquestions are welcoming of newcomers and
quite active.
