You could try : If you're not already, be aware there's an alternate terminal emulator available even if the desktop emulator won't work. Access by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1. You'll have to login (user name and password). At that point, you can run the inxi
command. Indeed, you can do anything you would in a desktop terminal. To exit and return to the desktop, hit Ctrl-Alt-F7 (on some computers, it's F8 or F9).

Hope that helps. The link may provide more help.
Thanks. It's Linux Mint Sylvia 18.3. Original was 18.1. I did manage to run commands from command line, and reinstall gnome-terminal, but terminal still won't open.
I have not upgraded Linux Kernel beyond 14.5 I think it is, because last time I installed 15.1 it was unable to use my wifi. Instruction at that time said to wait for 16.1 to fix that issue. I'm still waiting.
But that is, I think, a separate issue from terminal.
I'm thinking of getting a backup hard drive and burning some new 19.1 install discs. But it's all a lot of work.

Terminal is kaput. No Terminal. Trying to fix this but one must run commands to do so. How do I run commands when terminal won't launch?
