Free software is a great idea, and my undying gratitude to those who labor
to make it so.
That being said, I do not believe that I am owed anything for free. As
systems advance and become more complicated, it takes a correspondingly
larger amount of time and effort to develop the OS, drivers, and software.
The reality seems to be that if we want world class systems that can stand
on a footing equal with the competitors, it may be impossible to find enough
people with enough time and talent to keep using only their spare time.
I run Ubuntu, Vista, and OS X Snow Leopard on my different machines. As
mentioned previously, I too see my equipment as tools to perform tasks. I
don't put an SAE socket on a metric bolt because I love SAE so much. I use
what works for the task at hand. The last time I was really in love with a
computer, was during the heyday of the under appreciated and ahead of its
time Amiga.
It would be sad to see Linux - GNU/Linux, or whatever one wants to call it,
fractured and destroyed by rivalry and infighting. (Google Pyrrhic Victory)
Perhaps if we mended fences and put down our swords, hardware vendors might
be a little more inclined to work on drivers. Who knew penguins could be so
vicious? ;-)
