See, I would consider that crippled. :) (soft shoes to, "You say
to-may-to, I say to-mah-to.) I'm not writing from personal experience
with it, but from what I gathered from the TLUG and NYLUG lists (NY and
Tokyo) many considered it pretty bad.

Yes. There are conspiracy theories afoot that MS pushed them into it.
I find that unlikely--however, the Linux installed netbooks are harder
to find now--in part, I'm sure, because they did badly--in part, at
least, because of what we're discussing. However, some exec in Acer did
admit that MS pushed them--and when the vast majority of your customers
need (or think they need--both instances are true) MS, you have to
listen.
